Functorial compactification of the moduli space of rational elliptic surfaces

Synopsis:

There are several compactifications of the moduli space of rational elliptic surfaces in the literature, for example one by Heckman-Looijenga. We present a new one that is especially easy: it is a finite quotient of a toric variety associated to the E8 root system. In addition, it has a natural functorial meaning. Based on a joint work with Thompson.
