Topics and readings
This section will be updated weekly to list the topics for the week and suggested readings on those topics. Choose from the suggested readings according to your need and taste. Books are listed by the initials of the author. Numbers are section numbers or page numbers. For example, "MA: 15.1-15.3" refers to sections 15.1 to 15.3 of the book by Michael Artin, and "JM: pp. 7 - 19" refers to pages 7 to 19 of the online book by J. S. Milne.

Assignments, testing, grading
- Every Monday starting February 3
- Homework assignment due. Homework grades will be 50% of the final grade.
- February 24
- Half period quiz, 5% of the final grade.
- March 30
- Midterm exam, whole period, 15% of the final grade.
- Finals week
- Final exam, whole period, 30% of the final grade.
Academic integrity and etiquete
- Please feel free to ask questions and make relevant comments during class. If something is unclear to you, it probably is unclear to many other students.
- Please do not use laptops or other devices during class except to take notes (this is rare) or for an emergency (more rare).
- Please review the
NYU academic integrity policy.
This policy tells faculty to clarify collaboration rules for each class.
For this class:
- Students may use any materials and consult with each other or work together to understand the material and figure out how to do the exercises.
- Students must prepare homework solutions individually and independently. Students may not copy solutions from other students or from any other source, including internet sources or other textbooks.
- Students may not allow their work to be copied by other students.
- Faculty have a responsibility to create an environment that does not
encourage cheating.
- I will ensure that the work load is managable by an individual student working independently.
- I will work with the grader and TA to identify cheating.
- I will listen to anyone's thoughts or complaints on this issue. Please let me know if the work load is unmanageable or if you suspect others of cheating.
