Pompei is the city which was destroyed by an explosion of Mt. Visuvius (visible in the background). You've probably heard of the preserved statues of people killed by the ash after the eruption (pictured below). I was impressed by their well-developed sense of structred design. Considering the city was wiped out in 79 AD (on a Tuesday), I enjoyed seeing the patterns of symmetry and tessellations in the floor tiles (which deserve better preservation, since I could freely walk on some of them).
