The TAP equations for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

Speaker: Raphaƫl Berthier

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 201

Date: Thursday, October 31, 2019, 12:15 p.m.

Synopsis:

In this talk, I will introduce some mathematical microscopic models of magnetic materials, including the famous Ising model. Solving these models allows physicists to explain the macroscopic magnetic behavior of these materials from their microscopic description. I will explain two different approximations that are made by physicists in order to solve these models: the naive mean-field equations and the TAP equations, and will discuss what can be proven rigorously by mathematicians.
